For the last 15 years, the NSTF has grown to be the largest science and technology event in country, promoting the development of science and technology through the youth. This year, DepEd called for intensified innovations in teaching and learning amid the constraints brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic that has changed the landscape of education towards a new normal. According to DepEd, “this has magnified the role of the sciences and research in providing specific and effective solutions to global issues and challenges.”
Conducted by DepEd’s Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD), this year’s theme focused on “Expanding the Horizon: Futures of STEM.” The annual event continues to empower the youth by cultivating innovation. It also showcases how learners maximize their curiosity and creativity in dealing with real-life challenges such as community problems.
The 2022 edition bannered the following activities and competitions: 1) Siyensikula – an original video creation competition; 2) Likha – a research proposal competition; 3) #SteMTokperiments – a TikTok Science Experiment Competition; 4) AghamBayaniJuan – a public community exhibition of partners in Science, Technology, Research and Innovation; and 5) STEM Academy – a conference for learning and development for students and teachers on innovation, creativity and excellence in Science and Research.
DepEd BCD Director Jocelyn Andaya shared in Filipino that the NSTF is a testament to the youth’s heightened awareness about what’s going on around them. She said that the researches were resourceful in using what was available to them in solving problems in their communities, especially issues confronting their generation such as climate change, drug addiction, etc.
The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), a staunch supporter of DepEd’s NSTF, provided support for the online platform of the event together with USAID. GBF also provided prizes for the winners of the Likha Individual and Team Competitions. It its effort to intensify its support for STEM teachers, GBF also conducted the first STEM Collab capacity building session for educators, focusing on the topic “Teaching Math and Science through Inquiry-Based Approach.
GBF also participated in the "Women In STEM" panel discussion represented by Learner and Community Education Head Graciela Mendoza who also delivered the closing remarks of the NSTF.
The event gathered around 10,000 attendees with 1,500 students, 8,000 teachers and 500 school heads, supervisors and other stakeholders.
